COLUMBIA (AP) -- South Carolina legislators have postponed a vote on a measure that would ban texting while driving and chatting in the car with a hand-held phone.
A House Education subcommittee on Wednesday announced the postponement.
The bill up for debate would ban drivers from sending text messages or using a hand-held cell phone. Handsfree devices are exempt.
A conviction on the misdemeanor could result in a fine up to $100.
Ned Blackmon of Lancaster urged legislators to pass it. He said his son was killed in December 2003 because the driver in front of his vehicle pulled in front of a logging truck as she talked on a cell phone.
The bill is among six proposed this year that deal with text messaging, cell phone use in the car, or both.
