Pro-life activists rallied on the front steps of the state capital urging legislation.

COLUMBIA -- The anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion prompted a rally at the state house Friday.

For years, Columbia’s Johnny Gardner has been a recognizable figure in the pro-life movement.

“We’ve got people inside the state house that are wanting to put restrictions on abortions, I say we need to do more than put a band-aid on it,” said Johnny Gardner.

“I’ve talked to so many mothers that thought it was just a medical procedure.  They had no idea it offended God or that it was wrong,” said Pastor Dr. Stan Craig of Choice Hills Baptist Church in Greenville.

A website for Planned Parenthood offers options when it comes to pregnancy.  A portion of their mission statement says “Only you can decide what is best for you.  But we are here to help.  Learning the facts about abortion may help you in making your decision.”

This is the fourth year activists have gathered at the state capitol, but some don’t feel their presence will make a difference.

“I wish it would,” says Christine Harcom of Anderson, “that was my desire, but I don’t think it will change much.”

Organizers planned for a larger crowd Friday, but still hope their message was heard.
