MOUNT PLEASANT (AP) -- The town of Mount Pleasant has begun clearing land for a 3,000-foot-long, 10-foot-tall wall that will protect subdivision residents from the sounds of construction along U.S. Highway 17 south.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Monday that the sound barrier wall will cost $743,000. It's part of a $14 million project to widen 2.5 miles of highway from four lanes to six lanes from Isle of Palms connector to S.C. Highway 41.
Angela Rikard of the Snee Farm subdivision says she's glad to hear the wall is being built. Rikard lives at the end of a cul-de-sac near the highway.
She says the roar of passing trucks muffles outdoor converations and the noises can inhibit sleeping. In addition, she says she gets a headache from the exhaust fumes if she sits outside too long.
