EASTOVER, S.C. -- Richland County (WACH) - Richland County deputies say it isn't likely anyone will face charges in the accidental shooting death of 17-year-old David Luke Dodenhoff.

According to an incident report, the teen was accidentally shot Friday evening when he and a friend were shooting at targets and small game on some property off McCord's Ferry Road in Eastover.   The report says the other teen, who has not been identified, was looking through the scope of his rifle and "bugs were flying around" and when he shot he heard Dodenhoff fall to the ground.

Dodenhoff was rushed to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital.  Richland County coroner Gary Watts confirmed the 17-year-old died shortly after 11 am Saturday.

State laws dictates that no one under 18 can legally possess a firearm, however, because the teens were hunting, a different set of rules apply.  Anyone 16 years or older can be in possession of a firearm when hunting, as long as that person has a valid state hunting license and has completed a hunter education course.  Reports indicate that David Luke Dodenhoff had both.

Dodenhoff was a student at A.C. Flora high school.  Several online memorials have been set up in his honor.  Thousands of people have joined the Facebook listings since his death.

Funeral services for Dodenhoff are set for Tuesday at 3:30 pm at Shandon Baptist Church.
