Giving back in style
Columbia, S.C.- Midlands residents can get a free haircut and help battered and abused women this weekend. Students at the Heyward Career and Technology Center are offering their services in exchange for donations for Sistercare, a program that serves as a safe haven for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence.
"We participate in various community projects," said cosmetology teacher Zoraida Wright-Perry. "Last month it was Harvest hope and this time we're bringing awareness to Sistercare." Wright-Perry says this philanthropic effort is a mutually beneficial experience for everyone involved.
"The community benefits because they are able to give back to the community and get a free service," she said. "The students will now get hands on preparation of working with the public," she added.
The event will be held on Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Heyward Career and Technology Center from 8am until 3pm. Participants will receive a free shampoo and wrap style by donating various paper products like bathroom tissue, plates, napkins, etc. and toiletry donations will be rewarded with a free haircut.
