Another stimulus program designed to spur the economy and help make America a "greener" nation will soon come to South Carolina.

The South Carolina Energy Office is announcing a rebate program for new energy efficient refrigerators, dishwashers, water heaters and other appliances.  The new program is similar to the recent "Cash for Clunkers" program which involved rebates to consumers who traded in older, gas guzzling cars and trucks for new, more efficient models. Rebates range from $50 to $500 and only apply to Energy Star rated appliances.

The rebate program begins on March 31, 2010 is funded by South Carolina's $3.9 million share of $300 million in federal stimuls money distributed nationwide.  Residents interested in purchasing appliances under the program can obtain more information on a special website. (We have provided a link to the website below.)

"We hope this web site will be a useful tool that will enable South Carolinians to locate retailers and contractors participating in the program," said John Clark, Director of the energy Office in a release.  "In addition, the website will serve as a resource to citizens as they learn more about energy efficiency."

Rebate levels were determined based upon the cost difference betweenstandard and Energy Star appliances.  Energy Star qualified appliances incorporate advanced technologies that use 10-to-15 percent less energy and water than standard models,  according to the Energy Office release.

Customers who purchase a new appliance under the rebate program must turn in old items for recycling.
