COLUMBIA -- South Carolina will begin giving out $500 rebates for furnaces and heat pumps in March.

The state Energy Office on Wednesday announced the launch of a nearly $4 million rebate program for Energy Star certified appliances.

The program is part of $300 million set aside in the federal stimulus and recovery law. Rebates range from $50 for room air conditioners and dishwashers to $500 for heat pumps and furnaces.

The Energy Office has a Web site at appliancerebates.sc.gov with details of eligible appliances.

The rebates will be applied at store checkouts for smaller appliances. Companies installing whole-house equipment like water heaters and heating systems will reserve rebates online and give customers mail-in forms.
