COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina is getting a federal grant to help foster children turning 18 to make an easier transition into adulthood and expand a United Way phone program to help people find social services.
The State newspaper of Columbia reports part of the $750,000 grant will help the state Department of Social Services try to keep some children out of foster care.
DSS Chief of Staff Katie Morgan says the money can be used to help a grandmother file for food stamps or find clothes when she suddenly has to take care of her grandchildren.
About $130,000 from the grant will go to expand the United Way's 2-1-1 phone system statewide. The hot line run by the group helps people get information for a range of social services.
