COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- U.S. Attorney Walt Wilkins feels good about his time as South Carolina's top federal prosecutor as his service comes to an end.
President Barack Obama last month appointed Columbia defense attorney Bill Nettles to take over for Wilkins, whose last day in office is January 10th.
Wilkins says his family's pedigree put him under a microscope. His uncle is a former South Carolina House speaker who President Bush appointed to serve as U.S. ambassador to Canada. And his father was Ronald Reagan's first selection to the federal bench.
But Wilkins says he worked hard to forge good relationships with local law enforcement. He also focused on training them to help federal authorities.
