LEXINGTON COUNTY -- A Lexington County Detention Center guard was arrested Wednesday and charged with attempting to provide marijuana and cigarettes to an inmate in the jail.
Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Phillip Fields, 29, was immediately fired upon arrest. Fields had been a correctional officer with Lexington County since July. Metts said deputies found the marijuana on Fields inside the detention center.
Fields is charged with furnishing contraband and drugs to a prisoner as well possession of marijuana and misconduct in office by a public official, said Metts. Fields was released from the detention center Wednesday on a $37,000 bond.
Deputies also arrested Tawanda Williams, 35, and charged her with providing the marijuana and cigarettes to Fields. She remained in the detention center Thursday on $37,000 bond.
Both Fields and Williams could face up to 10 years in prison. Furnishing contraband to a prisoner is a felony under state law, said Metts.
