A landfill that’s been closed for over 30-years in Lexington may get a chance at a second life.
Talks about changing the 22-acre site near I-20 and SC-6 into a seven field athletic complex have been put on hold for over five years.
"It's been a long road,” said Stambolitis.
Lexington County Councilman Ted Stambolitis came up with the idea in 2004 when he was first elected to council.
His idea stalled when state officials believed the site was a possible source of ground water contamination to nearby neighborhoods. But after a recent town-sponsored study found no environmental problems at the site, his dream of transformation is closer than ever before.
"I wanted to turn something that negative into a postiive and do something good for the community," said Stambolitis.
If all goes as planned the area will get seven new fields complete with bathrooms and plenty of parking. Tackling the project means raising the money to build the $500,000 complex.
Stambolitis says he expects to do that through grants and donations. He also says the complex should pay for itself overtime.
"You have families and groups that come in from out of town, with soccer or baseball tournament and they'll stay the weekend and spend money at the trestaurants and the retailers," said Stambolitis.
