CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Corrections officers in one South Carolina jail have a new system for controlling unruly inmates.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Saturday that 10 Charleston County jail officers recently completed training to become part of the Special Operations Group.

Officers are equipped with helmets, a Kevlar vest and a Mossberg shotgun with a laser pointer that can shoot rubber rounds.

The new unit will eventually replace the five-member teams that barged into cells and physically wrestled inmates to the ground. Officials say the new units are better because fewer officers can get the same result, with less contact with the inmates.

U.S. Corrections, a government contractor, provided the training through a federal grant.
