COLUMBIA -- Several inches of snow has fallen across northern parts of the Upstate Friday although the wet weather is changing over to rain in the Midlands.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for all of the mountains, and most northern S.C. counties until Saturday evening. Fox Carolina in Greenville reports moderate to heavy snow falling on Caesars Head in northern Greenville County that is piling up, making roadways slick.
WACH Fox News reporter Katie Williams is on scene in Spartanburg County and reports 2-3 inches of snow on the ground along with slick roadways.
The National Weather Service predicts a mixture of rain, sleet and snow for western North Carolina Friday, with heavy snow in the afternoon. Asheville is expected to receive around a foot of snow by Saturday night, while the foothills could see 8 to 12 inches.
In the Midlands, the system looks to dump mostly rain although a rain/sleet mix is possible for areas to the north and west of Columbia, said SkyWACH Weather anchor Justin Kier.
"I don't expect any travel problems from any sort of wintry mix," says SkyWACH Weather Anchor Justin Kier. "Be cautious of heavy rain and gusty winds though. The travel problems come into play for those traveling to North Carolina and parts of the Upstate."
Bridges and overpasses may be somewhat slick in the far northern and western Midlands. Always exercise caution on the roadways and stay aware of the latest forecast information.
The SkyWACH Weather Team is on top of the situation and monitoring any developing changes to the weather system.
