HORRY COUNTY -- A 16-year-old girl charged with burying the remains of a fetus will appear before a judge on Tuesday in family court.

The teenager, whose name is not being released because of her age, has been in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia since last Monday. A judge will decide Tuesday whether she should be released to the custody of her parents.

Officials say she's been under suicide watch and was to undergo a mental evaluation.

The girl is charged with desecration of human remains, after the fetus was found buried at her former home on Woodwinds Drive near Conway.

Police say they were notified by the girl's mother, who found pictures of the burial on her daughter's cell phone. The mother then went to the former home, retrieved the remains and called police.
