(AP) -- SANTEE, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina transportation officials have closed a lane of Interstate 95 to make emergency repairs after cracks were found on a bridge spanning a lake.
The state Department of Transportation says bridge inspectors found superficial cracks on a span of the bridge carrying the northbound lanes of I-95 over Lake Marion near mile marker 100.
Officials say one northbound lane must be closed to repair the cracks immediately. Crews will work around the clock and hope to have the repairs finished by Dec. 19.
About 15,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily. Troopers say there will be long delays and suggest taking an alternate route, but the closest detour is about 40 extra miles on mostly two lane roads.
