The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force says women should start getting mammograms at 50-years of age and repeat them every other year until age 70. That contradicts the current norm of starting annual exams at age 40.
The government-backed panel says potential harm from yearly mammograms could outweigh the benefits. It also feels doctors are wasting money doing the tests so early. But every major cancer group and many medical professionals think that's crazy.
Here in Columbia, Wendy Duheme does mammograms at the Palmetto Health Comprehensive Breast Center. She's also a breast cancer survivor and she calls the recommendation dangerous.
