COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- His attorneys say Gov. Mark Sanford couldn't waive complete confidentiality to a state ethics investigation even if he wanted to.
The Republican's attorneys argue in court documents filed Monday that law doesn't allow people being investigated by the State Ethics Commission to waive confidentiality to internal commission materials.
Sanford waived confidentiality to the commission's investigation. But his attorneys say Sanford didn't allow the release of all the information in the report, just the fact he was being investigated.
The commission's attorneys now have until Friday to respond.
Associated Press investigations questioning the governor's travel prompted the probe, which should be completed next month.
