Soldier Dies at Fort Jackson

Basic Training death is second in less than a month

A soldier in Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson has died from what was initially diagnosed as pneumonia.

According to base officials, 23 year-old Spc. Christopher Hogg died Thursday night around 9:00 PM. Hogg was admitted to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital on September 3 with fever and respiratory problems.

The exact cause of death is being determined

Hogg, from Deltona, Fla., was in his fifth week of training with D Company, 3rd Battalion 13th Infantry Regiment, which is scheduled to graduate Oct 15.

His family has been in Columbia since Monday.

A memorial service is being planned for early next week.

This is the second Basic Training death a Fort Jackson in less than a month. Pvt. Jonathan Morales died August 20 from a heat related illness.
