The political winds could be changing in the state capitol after recent calls for Governor Mark Sanford to step aside. Even those who have supported Sanford's policies through two terms are telling him to resign.
"We appreciate what you've done, but for the betterment of the state and for the betterment of the family, it's imperative you step down," says Randy Page.
Page is president of South Carolinian's for responsible government. That is a group that has had Sanford's back during his governorship. Now it's calling for a new direction in state leadership.
"For his good and for the state's good, he's got to step down or else we go into 2010 and absolutely nothing is going to get accomplished," says Page.
"It's going to be difficult year in 2010," says USC political science professor Todd Shaw.
He says even if Sanford resigns and Lt. Gov. André Bauer steps in, as Bauer asked for on Wednesday, things won't be easy.
"We must figure out a way to fix this breech and get the voters on board here in South Carolina," says Shaw.
Randy Page agrees with Shaw. Although Page doesn't like asking a man he considers a friend to resign, he says the Sanford saga has reached its breaking point.
"We need a full-time governor, need someone who can lead and lead now. There are more important titles than governor and that's husband and father. I hope he's able to repair that breech with them," says Page.
