COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina producers who support certain crops could be eligible for special assistance.
Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers says his agency is now accepting applications for institutions and groups that support crops like fruits and vegetables, dried fruit, tree nuts, horticulture and nursery crops.
The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service as established by the 2008 Farm Bill.
Project proposals are due Aug. 15. Final decisions are expected in mid-October. Projects should not take longer than three years, and money can't be used for capital expenditures like buildings or equipment.
Anyone interested in participating in the program should submit a one-page summary with a project plan and estimated cost.
