An ammonia leak just outside of Swansea has left one woman dead officials from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) announced at a joint briefing Wednesday.

Emergency crews found the woman, whose name has not been released, lying next to her car while responding to the leak Wednesday morning. They believe she was overcome by chemical fumes.

The leak, which was reported at approximately 8:20 AM, began as ammonia was being loaded into a tanker truck at Tanner Industries near the intersection of Hwy 321 and Whetstone Rd.

WACH Fox news crews are on the scene and we will continue to update you as more information becomes available.
