For 60 years, a Lexington County camp hosted troops of girl scouts every summer- helping build life-long friendships.
Camp Congaree is closing at the end of the summer, because of what officials call a sign of the times.
"Here's where we made kool-aid, pizza and lasagna," said MIchelle Yarborough.
17 year old Michelle Yarborough remembers fun summers at Camp Congaree in Lexington County.
"There was a huge lake and we always got to run and jump in the lake," said Yarborough.
But memories of canoe trips and craft time will soon end for the next generation.
The camp is one of seven girl scout facilities shutting down after this summer.
"The seven that are closing are closing because they are not destination by choice, meaning the fact that the capacity is only at 40 percent shows that girls are not coming," said Susan Schneider.
That 40 percent is not nearly enough to pay the 250,000 bill to run the camp every year.
Susan Schneider of Girl Scouts of South Carolina says young people don't have the same love for the great outdoors they once did.
"We're finding that girls would rather do other things rather that rustic camping," said Schneider.
Like arts, crafts and indoor camping.
So the girl scouts plan to open an updated indoor center in Columbia.
" A lot of girls won't have the experience that I did, so it's sad. It will always be in the older girls hearts," said Yarborough.
If you have a photo or memory from Camp Congaree, we'd love to hear it.
