Some local teens are working hard to figure out match and chemistry equations at the Benedict College's South Carolina Alliance for Minority participation program.
The goal is to increase the number of minority students in pursuing college degrees in science and math.
One of the students participating in the program is recent high school grad Theta Brown..
She's an Eau Claire High School stand out who's received a very prestigious award.
Theta Brown has high hopes for the future.
"When I go to college, I'm going to major in biology."
The recent Eau Claire High School graduate is among a handful of students learning about math and sciences at Bendict College Tuesday.
This partnership with Benedict College and the South Carolina Alliance of Minority Participation program is geared to helping minority groups further their education in the science field.
"Give me some research experience so I'll be kinda prepared when I go to the lab."
Theta Brown plans to spend many hours there.
In April, the Furman-bound student was awarded the Gates Millenium Scholarship - Brown is one of a thousand students in the US to earn a full ride to the school of her choice from the nation's largest minority scholarship program.
"It's amazing to know that I got picked, and now I don't have to pay for college, so it's a wonderful feeling."
So watch out South Carolina, because this young scientist, is bound to turn some heads in the future.
Theta graduated from Eau Claire High School with a 4.37 GPA.
She represents one of South Carolina's Gates Millenium Program Scholarship Winners .
Other recipients are from 47 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam..
