COLUMBIA, SC --

A late night fire in Columbia has left a family homeless.

Shortly after midnight, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a fire on Chartwell Street.  One man was at home and tells WACH FOX news that he was laying down in bed when his smoke detectors went off.  He ran to get himself and his four dogs out of the house and called 911.

When fire crews arrived, there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage area.

Deputy fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins tells us that there is heavy damage to the house, and two firefighters were injured battling the blaze.  One was sent to the hospital and another was treated on the scene.  Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
