(AP) -- The South Carolina chapter of the NAACP is presenting one of its top awards to two men who led civil rights efforts in the state.
U.S. District Judge Matthew Perry and Bishop Frederick Calhoun James will receive the group's Presidential Citation for Civil Rights Advocacy Award on Saturday. The state National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will present the awards as part of its annual Freedom Fund Celebration event.
Perry, who was once a counsel for the state NAACP, represented clients in dozens of civil rights cases. He successfully fought to integrate Clemson University in the early 1960s before becoming a federal judge in 1979.
James is president of the Sumter NAACP and a former leader of the state African Methodist Episcopal church.
