GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- A 36-year-old South Carolina man who killed a father in front of his wife and sons after mouthing racial insults at them has accepted a plea bargain and been sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Daniel Staggs was serving life in prison without parole for the 1996 killing in a Greenville parking lot, but the state Supreme Court overturned that murder conviction two years ago.
The Greenville News reports that Staggs pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Wednesday because the victim's family didn't want to go through another trial.
Staggs says he shot Daniel Greer several times because he feared for his life after a pickup Staggs was in blocked Greer's minivan.
Greer was black and his wife was white, while Staggs also is white.
