GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Furman University president David Shi (Shy) says he will retire next year, after leading the Greenville school for 16 years.

The school said Wednesday that the 57-year-old Shi plans to step down June 30, 2010.

He is the tenth president of the private, liberal arts school in its 183-year history. Shi is a 1973 Furman graduate who became president in 1994.

Shi says he told trustee leaders 18 months ago to begin planning for his retirement. Furman Board of Trustees chair Kathy Crum McKinney praised Shi for his tenure and says the panel plans to have a successor named before he leaves.

He says he wants to return to teaching and writing about American history.
