NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Authorities say a wildfire that burned nearly 30 square miles along the South Carolina coast is completely contained.
The South Carolina Forestry Commission announced Tuesday that the fire won't be considered controlled until it no longer produces any heat.
Forest officials also say they have not found any evidence directing them away from their belief that the wildfire started last Wednesday when a trash fire set four days before rekindled.
The homeowner and Horry County fire officials disagree, with the owner saying he extinguished his fire and county officials saying it is too early to pinpoint where the wildfire started.
The fire destroyed 70 homes and caused $25 million in damages. Officials say lingering smoke will cause highway closures overnight.
Dozens of agencies from around the state sent equipment and manpower to the coast to help battle the blaze. The Columbia Fire Department and Lexington County Fire Services did both sending 8 and 5 firefighters, respectively. Those crews are now back in the Midlands and on the job for their departments.
