JOLO, PHILIPPINES (AP) -- Security forces in the Philippines have seized a large amount of explosives from the house of a man with alleged ties to al-Qaida-linked militants.
A provincial police chief in the southern Philippines says the seizure on Jolo island could thwart possible bomb attacks.
Marines and police raided the house Friday and found 14 bags of ammonium nitrate, a bag of potassium chlorate and more than 3,500 blasting caps. But the owner of the house managed to escape.
The raid was part of a campaign to eliminate sources of weapons for the Abu Sayyaf (AH'-boo SEYE'-yahf). The group has been included in a U.S. list of terrorist organizations for its al-Qaida links and involvement in kidnappings, bombings and beheadings.
A Navy spokesman says the man who owns the house is suspected of supplying explosive materials to the Abu Sayyaf.
