Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said David Johnny Cancer, 52, of 2504 Seagull Lane, Columbia, was booked at the Lexington County Detention Center at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday on five counts of obtaining goods under false pretenses, five counts of forgery, five counts of financial transaction fraud and two counts of criminal conspiracy. Cancer was being held on Friday, March 13 at the county Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.
Arrest warrants allege Cancer obtained the Social Security number and date of birth for another individual whom Cancer does not know, Metts said. Cancer obtained a South Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles identification card in that person's name. He used the identification card to open a checking account in that name.
Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives and Laurens County Sheriff’s Office deputies on Thursday, March 12 arrested a 52-year-old Columbia man who was wanted on 17 arrest warrants that Lexington County sheriff’s detectives obtained for the man. The warrants allege the man fraudulently obtained power equipment, all-terrain vehicles, computer equipment and utility trailers worth a total of about $17,000 from five businesses in Lexington County.
Lexington County sheriff’s detectives received information at about 5:15 p.m. on Thursday that Cancer was at a Honda all-terrain vehicle dealership on Honeybee Road near Laurens, Metts said. Detectives requested assistance from the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office, and returned Cancer to Lexington County Thursday night.
Metts said the case remains under investigation.
