A late evening fire has claimed the life of a North Augusta man according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
The Coroner’s office confirms that an 80 year old James E. Thorpe was alone at his home on Linnett Loop in North Augusta when a fire broke out at around 8:00 PM Tuesday.
Thorpe was transported to Doctor's Hospital in Augusta GA but succumb to burns and smoke inhalation. He was pronounced dead at 9:21 PM.
This is the first fire death in Aiken County for 2009. The North Augusta Department of Public Safety is investigating the fire’s cause.
