CLEMSON, SC (AP) -- Children from around South Carolina are vying to show off their Lego skills.
Clemson University on Saturday plays host to the South Carolina FIRST Lego League Championship Tournament.
About 80 teams of children ages 9 to 14 have spent months designing robots from Lego bricks, motors, sensors and gears.
The teams must maneuver their robot through obstacles and complete as many tasks as possible in under three minutes. The winner goes on to an international competition.
Organizers expect the free event to draw about 5,000 students, parents, coaches and spectators.
FIRST, an abbreviation for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology," was founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen for young people to inspire an interest in science and technology.
