(AP) -- A 9-year-old South Carolina girl is recuperating after being attacked by a rabid coyote while waiting at a school bus stop.
The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports that neighbors came out to help Ashton Crowe on Friday and she was able to run to safety while a teen and his grandfather subdued and shot the animal.
Sixteen-year-old David Miller kicked the coyote and held it down while his grandfather shot the animal. The coyote bit down on the barrel of Howard Rochester's .22-caliber pistol and Rochester fired several more times. The coyote died in a nearby field and tested positive for rabies.
Ashton suffered leg wounds and severe damage to her toe. Both she and Miller will require a series of five to seven vaccinations over a 21-day period for rabies treatment.
