MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (AP) -- The National Park Service celebrates the South Carolina's Gullah heritage with a series of weekend programs during the next two months.
The programs, presented with the help of the town of Mount Pleasant, are being held at 2 p.m. each Saturday at the CharlesPinckney National Historic Site in the town.
The offerings begin Saturday with sea island storytelling and sweetgrass basket weaving. Other programs will include everything from rice growing and indigo dyeing to the singing of spirituals and African drumming.
The programs continue through March 28.
The Gullah culture is that of slave descendants who lived on the sea islands of the Carolinas. The culture was largely preserved because of the relative isolation of the islands.
