6-year-old SC girl accidentally shot, killed

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina authorities say a 6-year-old girl has died after she was accidentally shot by a relative who was unloading a gun.

Spartanburg County Sheriff's Maj. Dan Johnson said the girl was shot once at a home in Spartanburg around 1 p.m. Friday. Johnson says the man was unloading the gun because he didn't want the child in danger.

Authorities say the girl died at the hospital shortly after the shooting.

The coroner's office has not released the girl's name.

Officials said it wasn't immediately clear how the man and the child were related.
