76 year old Lee Hileman loved to take his wife Geraldine on golf car rides.
The 85 year old suffered from dementia and needed fresh air.
Neighbor Martha Boyles lived behind the couple for many years and the sight of crime tape Monday evening scared her.
"We were scared to death because the police were going around knocking on doors and it really scared us because we feel so secure here," said Boyles.
When relatives hadn't heard from the couple, they asked a neighbor to check on them.
That's when the neighbor found the couple, dead.
According to Major Hampton Gardner with the Sheriff's department, the coroner confirms both the husband and wife died of natural causes.
"It's very rare to have 2 people die and foul play isn't involved," said Gardner.
Although rare, Boyles feels there's a silver lining to the Hileman's deaths.
"The Lord knows what he's doing, we don't. And everybody is in the Lord's time-it's his time," said Boyles.
Mr Hileman was a former reserve deputy and Mrs. Hileman worked for Shaw Airforce Base.
Major Gardner says it was unusual to see the pair apart.
"They were a very well known couple and he seldom weren't anywhere without her and she seldom went anywhere without him," said Gardner.
Funeral servies for the Hileman's are set for Saturday, January 10th and 11:00 at Bullock funeral home in Sumter.
