BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say a standoff has ended peacefully more than 24 hours after an armed man took a woman hostage.

Police Chief Larry McNeil says 29-year-old Brian Brand surrendered Thursday afternoon.

Family members say Brand went into the home of his girlfriend's mother Wednesday. The mother escaped and the girlfriend's sister was shot in the ankle as she left. The girlfriend was being held.

Brand surrendered after his hostage was able to escape.

It's not clear if Brand has an attorney. A number for Brand was not available and McNeil said he wasn't sure if the man had a lawyer.
