COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Clemson has promoted interim football coach Dabo Swinney to the permanent job.

Athletic director Terry Don Phillips said in a news release Monday afternoon that Swinney would get a five-year contract.

Swinney took over as interim coach Oct. 13 when Tommy Bowden resigned from the flailing Tigers.

He won four of his final five games to become bowl eligible. The clincher came this past Saturday when Clemson soundly defeated rival South Carolina 31-14.

Phillips had traveled the country interviewing candidates the past month.
