An early morning traffic accident put a toddler in the hospital.
Doctors say the child will be OK, and now it's about justice for the family.
Police say 23-year-old Jose Angel Ruiz-Aguilera was driving the Jeep Cherokee that hit the young boy.
For now, Aguilera will remain behind bars. A judge is holding off on a bond hearing for the man until a translator can be present in the courtroom.
Richland County investigators say Aguilera hit the young boy with his car Monday morning and left the scene, unaware of the incident.
"When he drove off he thought something was in the parking lot," said Richland County spokeswoman Monique Mack. "But he did not realize at that point, that he had hit the child."
Authorities say it was a hunch from the toddler's father that led deputies to the suspect.
"The father said he thought he knew where the vehicle was normally located, and they were able to go to the house," said Mack.
The 2-year-old was treated at the scene and later taken to a Columbia hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
"At this time the family is handling it, as best as we know, the best they can," said Mack.
In addition to charges for the hit-and-run, Aguilera is also facing charges for not having a valid driver's license. He is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
