SUMTER, S.C. (AP) -- A 29-year-old Sumter man who authorities say shot a woman 14 times at her apartment will spend the rest of his life in prison after a jury found him guilty but mentally ill.
The Item of Sumter reports that Derrick Harriot apologized to the victim's family before he was sentenced Thursday.
Harriot's lawyer asked for a 30-year sentence, saying Harriot was in special education classes all his life and wasn't taking medication to help his mental problems when he killed 23-year-old Quanna Cooper in March 2007.
Cooper's family asked for the life sentence, saying he tore their lives apart.
