BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- Beaufort County wants boaters who travel up and down the East Coast to stay a bit longer and hopefully spend more money.
County council on Monday agreed to provide such boaters a bit of tax relief.
The Beaufort Gazette reports the council agreed to let boaters stay in county waters six months before they are required to pay county taxes on their vessels. That's twice the number of days boaters could stay under the old law.
Annie Monnier has lived on her 50-boat for six years and likes the new ordinance. She says boaters will be more likely to shop and won't always have to worry when to move on to avoid paying taxes.
