Controversy is brewing in Lexington.
Town leaders are divided after claims that Councilman Todd Shevchik mailed hundreds of postcards challenging the leadership of Mayor Randy Halfacre.
"There are certain things you do as an elected official, and certain things you don't," said Councilman Danny Frazier.
The weekend before the November 4 elections, Councilmen Danny Frazier and Ted Stambolitis say they got word about the controversial postcards. The postcards show Halfacre's wife Angela winning $5,000 at a Chamber Gala. The postcard questions if her winnings are a conflict of interest.
"Parts of the card were making allegations against Mayor Halfacre's wife," said Councilman Frazier. "And I think that's what upset a lot of people."
"Family members, if they are not involved in the public eye, should not be involved with any type of issues," said Councilman Stambolitis.
Council members say when they first questioned Shevchik's involvement with the postcards, he denied everything, but he later admitted his involvement.
Council members did meet behind closed doors on Monday to discuss what they call "uncharted territory."
Councilmen Frazier and Stambolitis say next on the agenda includes taking this issue before the state ethics commission.
At this point there has been no action taken against Councilman Shevchik.
Shevchik is away on business and will not comment until he has had a chance to speak with fellow council members.
