CHESTER, S.C. (AP) -- A plant in Chester that makes telephone cable plans to shut down next spring, putting 200 people out of work.

Superior Essex plans to close March 31.

Strategic development director Hank Pennington said the Atlanta company is closing the plant because of a drop in demand for its product. Pennington said the business had been declining for some time as customers move from copper to fiber cables.

Chester County Supervisor Carlisle Roddey told The Herald of Rock Hill the decision is throwing the county for a loop.

Chester County had the state's eighth-highest unemployment rate in September, at 11.8 percent.
