CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Charleston's new fire chief is officially taking office.
Thomas W. Carr becomes the new chief during swearing-in ceremonies on Friday. Carr comes to Charleston after serving for 30 years in the Montgomery County, Md., Fire and Rescue Service.
He now heads a department recovering from the tragedy of last year's Sofa Super Store fire in which nine Charleston firefighters died.
Carr was selected from a field of 140 applicants and seven finalists. He replaces Chief Rusty Thomas who retired in June, a year after the deadly furniture store blaze.
