COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Benedict football coach Stanley Conner was hospitalized after suffering an apparent heart attack during his team's home game against Kentucky State.

The State newspaper of Columbia reported that Conner, who began feeling ill just before halftime of Saturday's game, was taken to the Tigers' lockeroom. Benedict sports information director Derrick Johnson said the coach was then rushed to Providence Hospitals.

Hospitals spokeswoman Margaret Gregory said Conner was in stable condition on Sunday. She provided no additional details.

Assistant coach Brian Wajert led the team in the second half. The Tigers beat Kentucky State 42-35 on Benedict's senior and high school day.

Conner, a native of Mobile, Ala., is in his second year at Benedict after serving as an assistant coach at Alabama A&M.
