MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- A man armed with a gun who blocked a hospital emergency room exit for about 16 hours in Conway says he only wanted to hurt himself.
In a telephone interview Tuesday from the Dillon County jail, Robert McGowan told The Sun News of Myrtle Beach that he went to the hospital because he wanted to talk to a doctor. The 42-year-old ex-convict says he never pointed the .22-caliber rifle at anyone else.
McGowan is charged with being a felon in possession of a weapon. He is being held without bail. His attorney Bill Nettles says he wants his client to undergo a mental evaluation.
McGowan was released from prison in December after serving 10 years for shooting an Horry County police officer in the hand.
