FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's Department of Health and Environmental Control wants to know what the public thinks about fresh water standards relating to recreation.
The first in a series of four public meetings is being held Tuesday in Florence.
Currently, freshwater is evaluated based on how much fecal coliform bacteria it has. But David Wilson of DHEC's Bureau of Water says changes in technology means there may be other indicators the state could use to judge the quality of water.
He said the plan is to gather information and data during the next several years before making any changes in the freshwater program.
Additional public meetings will be held next month in Columbia, Greenville and Summerville.
