CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The sailing ship Adventure is nearing its new home on the South Carolina coast.

The reproduction of the 17th century trading ketch sails into Charleston Harbor and to the Charleston City Marina on the Ashley River on Friday, completing a trip from Rockport, Maine, where it was built.

The vessel will complete its voyage up the Ashley River to Charles Towne Landing state historic site Saturday.

The Adventure replaces another vessel of the same design and name.

The original was built for South Carolina's tricentennial in 1970. But it sank at its moorings, a victim of time and weather, four years ago.

The new ship left Maine earlier this month.

Charles Towne Landing is the site of the first permanent English settlement in the Carolinas.
