COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina House and Senate are expected to ratify $488 million in spending cuts that strike deeply into spending at state colleges and health care programs.
The Senate agreed to give the bill final approval Friday and send the bill on its way to Gov. Mark Sanford.
In a news release Thursday, Sanford criticized legislators for not giving agencies a freer hand in deciding how to deal with cuts. And Sanford noted legislators relied on $270 million in one-time cash from savings to balance the budget. That money will have to be made up as they write the new budget for fiscal 2010.
Sanford says he'll take a close look at what can be vetoed.
