COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Former state Rep. Thad Viers has been indicted on burglary charges.

Defense attorney Dylan Goff said Thursday his client had been indicted by the Horry County Grand Jury on charges of first-degree burglary and petit larceny.

Authorities say the charges stemmed from the same incident that led to Viers' March resignation from the state House.

Viers was arrested in January 2012 and subsequently quit the Legislature a day before he was indicted on stalking and harassment charges. Authorities say the 34-year-old called, texted, emailed and showed up at his ex-girlfriend's home months after they broke up and didn't stop after police contacted him.

Those charges also led Viers to drop a congressional bid.

Goff says his client is innocent. It wasn't clear when Viers was expected to appear in court.
